For those heading to the WSGA Cache of the Month final, the final for this cache is off one of the side roads, not on the main logging road that you follow to the challenge final.
In memory of our friend Allanon.
One waypoint with the coordinates to the final. The first waypoint is from the Allanon hide GCN7J6, Druid Training, Exercise 3: The Hike to Greentop, which was replaced with a different container at the end of June, and the final is an ammo can I won at the 2010 WSGA Campout, to which Allanon was going to carpool with us to before his passing.
I first met Allanon in November of 2004. We had exchanged several emails over the prior few weeks first noticing his posts in the Groundspeak Northwest forums. Our emails resulted in an almost instant friendship. Unknown to the two of us prior is that he also worked with my brother-in-law. The first topic we discussed in those emails was the origin of my geocaching name, although not based on what he thought it was I had a certain appreciation of the subject matter, which led us to realize that we shared many more interests than just geocaching.
Our first meeting was at Big Rock Park, GCG07E, I had found it previously, but neither of us could find it that day. We carpooled from there to meet up with a larger group for a hike, but had some extra time. It will probably not surprise any of my geofriends that I dragged him along on his first multi hunt -- Valley Memorial Cache, GCK01E. The first of many multis we did over the years. Hence one of the reasons this cache is a multi.
This led to many more caching trips, usually here or there for a few caches, but in the Spring of 2007 we planned a long day trip to pick up DeLorme and county pages, and later that fall another. The spring one turned into a yearly tradition and a summer run was soon added. These always included getting up at the crack of dawn or before, driving like crazy, and returning well after midnight. The spring trip many times coincided with his birthday, just to add to the festiveness of the day!
We shared many interests, and our caching trips were filled with many conversations. The conversations are already missed, and I know that future trips, especially the spring trip will never be the same.
