Geocache Description:




The National Centre for Biosecurity and Infectious Disease

This cache brings you to the site of New Zealand's NCBID - The National Centre for Biosecurity and Infectious Disease. NCBID provides centralised coordination and emergency response for disease outbreaks, biosecurity investigations, chemical and biological threats and events. It is a collaboration between four New Zealand scientific and government agencies: Biosecurity New Zealand (a division of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry), Crown Research Institutes AgResearch and Environmental Science and Research (ESR), plus the state-owned enterprise AsureQuality.

NCBID is New Zealand's largest concentration of bacteriologists, virologists, and epidemiologists who specialise in human and animal health. Special containment laboratories are required for work on suspected cases of exotic animal and human disease (such as SARS and foot and mouth disease) and for investigating suspected bio-terrorism incidents. The NCBID houses the only infectious disease laboratory facility in New Zealand that provides this level of containment.

If you catch the 'Flu this year, this is where the influenza specimens are analysed to determine what strain it is, and provide details on any pandemic possibilities!

About the cache

The cache is a rather petite container. It only contains a logsheet so please bring a writing implement if you wish to log your find.

About the location

The NCID is located on Ward St in Wallaceville, Upper Hutt. You do not need to scale the razorwire fences or dodge the security cameras to find this cache! It is effectively a driveby but being a busy street with some housing nearby and pedestrians passing at times, please show due care (stealth) when searching for the cache as we do not want it to go missing!

I am using a log sheet for all Geocachers to record their success, and when it is full, I will scan the logsheet and attach its image to this cache entry as an archive! Please let me know when the logsheet is nearing maintenance time and I will supply a new sheet.
