The dominant spirit, however,
that haunts this enchanted region, and seems to be
commander-in-chief of all the powers of the air, is the apparition
of a figure on horseback, without a head. It is said by some to be
the ghost of a Hessian trooper, whose head had been carried away by
a cannon-ball, in some nameless battle during the Civil War, and
who is ever and anon seen by the country folk hurrying along in the
gloom of night, as if on the wings of the wind. His haunts are not
confined to the valley, but extend at times to the adjacent roads,
and especially to the vicinity of a huge sycamore tree at no great
distance.... the body of the trooper having been buried in the
local churchyard, the ghost rides forth to the area by nigh AND day
in quest of his head at a rushing speed with which he sometimes
passes the Hollow, like a midnight blast.
There are many things that I have
seen while hiking these trails (spiders, hogs, spiders, snakes,
spiders... have I mentioned spiders?) but lucliky, I have
never seen a headless horseman. I think that I have actually seen
some people that looked like Ichabod Crane though and I DID see
some pretty big spiders while placing this cache.
This cache is located at the
furthest point on the trail where you make your turn back towards
the trail head. Have fun and be careful with the cache and tether
while retrieving it from its sleepy hollow.
