New Ashford seeks old Ash Fort
NEW ASHFORD -
Lynn Steinhoff, co-chairwoman of the New Ashford Historical Commission, said the remains of the original Ash Fort, where the town first came into existence, are thought to be in the general location of a replica of the fort built in 1977 for the town's bicentennial.
"I'd say it's in the general area," she said. "It could be a quarter of a mile off. Some people have been up there, walked around and found a foundation."
Ash Fort is believed to have been built in 1769. It was very small and made of ash logs, which inspired the name for the fort, Steinhoff said.
"One of the reasons behind building it up there was not only to protect residents from attacks, but they felt that down in the valley, where the fog settled, was bad for their health," she said.
