Geocache Description:

Grote Koolwijk

Het gebied Grote Koolwijk, onderdeel van wat nu het bosgebied Herperduin wordt genoemd, is een zeer mooi en gaaf voorbeeld van de effecten en landvormen veroorzaakt door de laat-middeleeuwse zandverstuivingen.
Het bestaat grotendeels uit landduinen en markante stuifzandwallen met enkele vennen in de laagste delen, waaronder het Klompven en het Ganzenven.
De duinen zijn ontstaan als gevolg van de intensieve landbouwpraktijken in die tijd. Overbegrazing door schapen en overmatige plaggenwinning zorgde voor ernstige aantasting van de heidevegetatie waardoor grote hoeveelheden zand gingen verstuiven. Door de overheersende zuidwestenwinden werd het zand in noordoostelijke richting in duinen opgewaaid.

Om deze earth-cache te mogen loggen, ga naar de bovengenoemde coördinaten en:
  • 1. Maak een foto van jezelf en/of je gps met op de achtergrond het informatie bord;
  • 2. Maak ook een foto van het Ganzenven zodat te zien is hoe deze verandert gedurende de verschillende jaargetijden;
  • 3. Bereken de grootte van de ven en mail deze naar mij. Let op, loop niet vlak om de ven heen, maar blijf op het pad en loop zo helemaal om het ven heen. Stuur deze afstand naar mij.

Logs met foto en het juiste antwoord via de email blijven staan, de rest wordt verwijderd.
Great Koolwijk area


The Great Koolwijk area, part of the woodland Herperduin, is a very nice and neat example of the effects and landforms caused by the late medieval sands dunes.
It consists mostly of dunes and shifting sands striking walls with some pools in low areas, including Klompven and Ganzenven.
The dunes are caused by the intensive agricultural practices at that time. Overgrazing by sheep and excessive sod production caused serious damage to heath vegetation causing large quantities of sand were squirt. By the prevailing south westerly winds, the sand blowed in a northeasterly direction into the dunes.

To log this earth-cache go to the above coordinates and:
  • 1. Take a picture of yourself and / or you GPS in front of the infoboard and add this to your log;
  • 2. Take a picture of the Ganzenven so you can see how this changes over the seasons.
  • 3. Calculate the size (outline) of the Ganzeven and mail it to me (Note, do not walk close to the ganzeven but stay on the path. You can walk on the path totaly around it.)

Logs with a picture and the correct answer via email remain, all others will be removed.
