NS Spirit Trail: Ambleside Tales Traditional Cache
Highlander 71: I have decided to retire this cache. After being reminded recently that BC Hydro does not allow geocaches to be placed on their property, I can't justify returning it to active duty. I offer my apologies to anyone who had been planning to look for it, and my thanks to all who enjoyed the challenge of finding it.
Cache on!

Ambleside Park has played a significant role in the lives of a great many West Vancouverites over the years, and I don't have nearly enough space here to tell all the tales I could. Suffice to say the changes that have taken place across the tracks from this cache's hiding spot have buried a lot of fond memories. Check out the link for some background on the new Rutledge Field.
The dirt field that was upgraded to an all-weather artificial turf surface was for many years the site of an annual carnival that arrived every spring. We would scrape together what money we could and go to the park to eat the “exotic” carnival foods and ride the thrilling rides. Of course, it took a bit of experience to realize you shouldn't eat until after you were finished with the rides. Many a kid wasted their money on treats they saw coming back up after a particularly bumpy ride.
That field also saw its fair share of pickup softball games, some where the folks who ended up playing hadn't come to the park to play ball at all. I recall one such game in the early '70s that just sort of happened, and when a rather talented classmate of ours came by we persuaded him to join our team, even though he was not dressed for softball. I still smile when I remember him “falling off” his stylish 3-inch platform shoes as he rounded second base while trying for a triple. He had started out looking cool, but was lucky he hadn't broken an ankle running on those things!
This section of the Spirit Trail is a more direct route for traversing the park, and while it is not as scenic as the Seawall further south, on this trail folks are welcome to choose whether they will walk, jog, run, or ride their bikes, blades, boards, or scooters. Dogs (on leash) are welcome, too.
The container is a micro, so please remember to bring a pen or pencil. Sorry there is no room for swag, so just enter your name and date. Keep an eye out for muggles as traffic here can be heavy at times, and feel free to wander around the park. Since dogs also use this trail, you should watch out for their little "gifts" near the cache site.
