"The Medicine Bear of Cut Bank River"

"This happened not long after the time the first white men visited the Blackfeet. A small band of People were camped down by the Cut Bank River one Summer. It was early in the evening, and the men gathered in one of the tipis to talk. Outside, children were still playing, while the women gathered firewood and brought in water. One of these women carried her pouch of water right into the tipi in which the men were gathered, thereby interrupting the conversation. While down at the river, she told the surprised men, a stranger had watched her from a clump of bushes. She had hurried back without arousing any suspicion.
Quickly the men gathered their weapons from their tipis. Suddenly, they made their way down to the water’s edge. On the opposite shore they saw the members of a small enemy war party preparing to cross the river towards camp. They watched silently as the would-be attackers removed their clothes, wrapped their weapons with them, and held them over their heads while crossing the river.
Only the flowing water could be heard in the night air until -suddenly- came loudly the war-cries of the watchers as they attacked the war party of startled men. Left and right the enemy fell, until only their chief got to shore alive.
Some of the warriors watched the thicket in which the chief had managed to hide, while the rest took the trophies of battle to which they were entitled. From within the thicket came a torrent of insults, accompanied by loud grunting sounds and challenges to those outside to come in and fight. Remembering the chief’s ferocity in the open, no one dared to enter the dense brush to accept the challenge.
It was not until the following morning that the men were able to charge the thicket and slay their opponent. Around his neck they found a string of huge Grizzly Bear claws. Recalling the sounds he had made while fighting, the men knew that this was a Grizzly Bear Medicine Man. They feared his power, even as he lay dead. Camp was immediately packed up and moved.
The tipis had not even been set up at the new campsite when a great commotion took place. A very powerful Grizzly Bear had come into camp and knocked down one of the lodges and killed its occupants. The rest of the People tried to escape, but several more were killed before the huge Bear disappeared.
For many years after that battle camps that were made near the site were troubled by a large Grizzly Bear. The People felt that this was the enemy chief. They named the Bear Akoch’kitope -The Medicine Grizzly- and they feared his supernatural power."
