Geocache Description:

A traditional cache near the sea, a 20 minute walk from Tung Chung MTR station.

Tung Chung Battery was built in the early 19th century. This Battery, together with Tung Chung Fort some 1000 metres to the south, were built to strengthn control over the Lantau Channel, through which nearly all foreign ships had to pass on their way to Guangzhou.

In the late 18th century Tung Chung and Tai O were considered to be the only safe anchorages on Lantau Island. However, Tung Chung was largely unfortified. To remedy this situation, the Viceroy of Guangdong and Guangxi Provinces decided to erect the Tung Chung Battery in 1817. After its completion the Tung Chung Battery was placed under the command of the Dapeng Battalion and was manned by one officer and 30 soldiers.

From the MTR station, walk towards the Ngong Ping 360 skyrail terminus and turn left on Tat Tung Road. When you reach Shun Tung Road cross over and turn right.

Soon you will see some steps on the left which take you over the hill to Tung Chung Battery.

The contents of the original cache are: a logbook, a pen, a 2010 calendar and a Chinese Fan Geocoin.

Enjoy!
