Geocache Description:

Bayard Cutting Arboretum

Welcome to Bayard Cutting Arboretum State Park, the home of our second Wherigo. This cache, the first in a series of NY State Park Wherigo adventures, will take you on a great tour through the wonderful grounds. In summary, you'll see a nice island, diverse wildlife, pristine ponds, beautiful bridges, and maybe even a benchmark!

Perhaps one of the best-kept secrets on Long Island’s south shore, beautiful Bayard Cutting Arboretum offers a chance for you to “get away from it all” for an afternoon. This Wherigo will take you through some lovely parts of the park, located in Great River. The paths are level; however, depending on the weather, some trails may be muddy. Bicycling, ball playing, picnicking, and rollerblading are prohibited, ensuring a tranquil visit.

Benches are thoughtfully placed throughout the park. Take some time to pause and enjoy the sights and sounds of nature, including a variety of songbirds and many rare tree and plant specimens. Ospreys too make their home in the park, and several nests are visible in the chimneys of the mansion.  Once considered endangered, it is always a thrill to see these river hawks dive for food or hear their distinctive call.

Be sure to see the huge weeping beech, located near the mansion. This tree is large enough to have benches underneath its expansive branches! It is a wonderful spot to enjoy some deep shade. As well, there is a café in the mansion offering lunch and light refreshments.  Have a seat on the enclosed porch or in the Adirondack chairs overlooking the Connetquot River. Part of your exploration will include a walk along the river, home to mallards, swans, egrets, and Canadian geese.

One of the highlights of your stroll will be a stop at the aptly-named Breezy Island, where tall bamboo sways in the gentle wind. The tiny island is reached via footbridge.  Kayakers can often be spotted from the island. After enjoying a respite here, you will head towards the rhododendron walk.  Perhaps you will be lucky enough to see the large snapping turtles that make their home near the mini-waterfall connecting the river with a pond. Be patient, and let your eyes adjust to looking into the murky water at water’s edge; you just may spot them. But do not put your hands in the water; they are called snapping turtles for a reason. Box turtles, too, put in an appearance, often sunning themselves on a log in the pond.

No matter what the season, a visit to Bayard will renew your spirit, refresh your mind.  It is hard to believe that busy Montauk Highway is right outside its gates!

This is a NY State Park and has an admission fee. The Empire State Passport is accepted. Street parking is not available. The park is closed Mondays and all winter holidays (Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s).

The geocache container is an easy-to-find magnetic keyholder. It is not located within the boundaries of the state park, but it is within an easy driving distance.
