Geocache Description:

Calgary Parks 100 Project - Ranchlands Natural Parks

Calgary Area Cachers teaming up with The City of Calgary Parks

Celebrating Calgary Parks 100th Anniversary

The Calgary Parks 100 Project is a partnership between the City of Calgary Parks, and the Calgary Area Cachers to celebrate Calgary Parks 100th anniversary. Calgary Parks has supplied cache containers and swag for 100 caches, and the we have placed these 100 caches in 100 parks around Calgary. These caches have some cool swag and trackables when placed, so make sure to find them as soon as they are published.

The natural landscape of the Ranchlands residential district, as with that of others in northwest Calgary, was sharply undulating, glaciated “Knob and Kettle” terrain, mantled with Aspen groves. The tough grassland surface was open range for the ranchers who succeeded the indigenous Bison hunters.

Most lands to be developed for urban purposes are stripped of the natural cover and graded into new terrain for the construction of roads and houses. David Poppitt, manager for Melcor Developments, along with professional advisors, saw the potential to retain, integrate and preserve the most distinctive areas of the original natural landscape as amenities for the future residents of the new community of Ranchlands.

In the 1980s this approach was unprecedented, requiring at first reluctant support of the Calgary planning and parks authorities. It led to the policy in the City requiring examining the potential for and integrating valuable natural landscapes in new development areas.

The Cache

The cache is in a clone of Aspen trees. Outside this grove is one of many knolls typical of the Ranchlands natural parks with pristine native grassland and wildflowers, now rarely found in Calgary.
