Welcome to our families 6th cache. We wanted to up the stakes and do a water cache. This is a water cache not a land cache.
The factor of how far this is from a boat launch and the river traffic as well as the obstacles in the water you need to navigate around to reach the creek is the reason for the high terrain rating and the high difficulty rating. Good luck!
This cache is located on a easily seen piece of creek/marsh from I164 (Western Freeway) near the West Norfolk Bridge. However the entrance to the creek is small and located next to the MARSK terminals. I recommend a jon boat, stable canoe, or stable kayak. No sailboats can be used because there is a coal conveyor about 15 feet over the creek inlet. There is a little channel, but I would recommend trying for the cache close to high tide. The cache is 3.5 feet above mean high tide, so you may have to reach a little bit in a kayak.
The hitch is where to put your boat into the water. Any body can launch from City park Portsmouth, but it will be a long haul for any paddlers. About 2.5 to 3 miles in open water with a lot of boat traffic. The water can get a bit rough with just a slight breeze up the Elizabeth River once you are out of the Western Branch around the West Norfolk point. There is a place to launch a kayak or canoe or rent a jon boat under the Western Branch Bridge on the South side in Port Norfolk. There will most likely be a charge because this is a private beach run by Culpeppers Boat House.
The surrounding woods and property is owned by the steam plant that can be seen from the creek, and they work with local organizations to keep this area clean and trash free so that the animals can thrive and have a great habitat to live in. I would suggest checking out the wildlife such as birds, critters, and marsh animals(like periwinkles) while you are there.
Cache well!
Congratulations to "hatterasbeaches" for the FTF!
