Geocache Description:

This cache is located near Elmsett International Airport. The footpath offers fantastic views over the Suffolk country side and runs along side the airport.

Elmsett is a little village three miles north-east of Hadleigh with just under 1000 residents. The village dates back to 995 when it was called Ylmesaeton (Ylme for Elm and Saeten for dwellers). By 1900 the village had around 16 farms and a Mill (now a new housing development). In 1932 the village made national news when Charles Westren, a farmer at Elmsett Hall, refused to pay his tithe to the church. This is remembered by the Tithe memorial, located opposite the church to the north-east of the village.

Today, the village is home to numerous listed buildings and an ancient woodland. Sadly, most of the Elm trees were killed off by Dutch Elm Disease in the 60’s and 70’s.

Just to the West of the village is a friendly, quiet, well equipped and maintained grass airfield. Although unlicensed, the airfield has all the facilities of a much larger airfield. They also host Event Days.

The Cache is located just off a footpath which starts at the entrance to the airfield. The Cache is located on a footpath near to an opening which offers views over the airfield and the old mill site.
