ENG: The old hussar barracks is a huge area almost in the middle of the city. It has a very sad history.
The complex was built in 1889 when the 11th Hussar regiment was moved to Szombathely. They were here until 1919 when the regiment was dismissed. A few decades later, the area became the barracks for the russian troops in Szombathely and remained so until 1989.
When they left, a foundation had plans to build a school complex (from elementary to university) in the area and the city gave the whole complex to them. A few years later it became clear that the plans will no succeed, so the city took back 2/3 of the area (some buildings are used for education by the foundation).
Now the city is looking for investors to use this area. Until then what you can see is ruins and trees growing out of building roofs...

HUN: A húszhektáros parkkal övezett épületegyüttest 1889-ben emeleték, akkor költöztek Szombathelyre a 11-es huszárok.
Az ezred feloszlatásáig, 1919-ig állomásoztak itt. A terület pár évtizeddel késobb az orosz katonák tanyája lett. 1989-ben, miután ok is eltávoztak, a sok-hektáros komplexum az Apáczai Csere János Alapítvány tulajdonába került. (Az alapítvány eredendo célja egy gazdaságilag és szervezetileg is független, a magyar kollégiumi hagyományokat folytató, általános iskolával kezdodo és egyetemmel végzodo komplex oktatási intézmény létrehozása volt.) A szervezet azonban 1991 és 1997 között semmi látványos eredményt nem tudott felmutatni. A város 2005-ben hosszas viták után visszakapta a terület 2/3-adát. Az alapítvány oktatási tevékenységet folytat néhány felújított épületben. Jelenleg a város befektetokre vár, addig pedig a romokat és a házak tetejébol kinövo fákat csodálhatjuk meg.

DEU: Die alten Husaren Kaserne ist ein riesiges Gebiet fast in der Mitte der Stadt.
Es hat eine sehr traurige Geschichte. Der Komplex wurde 1889 erbaut, als das 11. Husarenregiment nach Szombathely verschoben wurde. Sie waren hier bis 1919, als das Regiment entlassen wurde. Ein paar Jahrzehnte später wurde das Gebiet der Kaserne für die russischen Truppen in Szombathely und blieb so bis 1989. Als sie gingen, war eine Stiftung plant, eine Schule zu bauen Komplex (von der Grundschule bis zur Universität) in der Region und die Stadt hat den gesamten Komplex zu ihnen. Ein paar Jahre später wurde klar, dass die Pläne wird nicht gelingen, so nahm die Stadt wieder zwei Drittel des Gebietes (einige Gebäude für die Bildung von der Stiftung verwendet werden). Jetzt ist die Stadt sucht Investoren für diesen Bereich zu verwenden. Bis dann, was Sie sehen können, ist Ruinen und Bäume wachsen aus den Dächern von Gebäuden ...
