When: August 19th, 2010 7:00pm
Where: Dog's Sports bar & Grill Merritt Island,
FL
I can't believe its already been one year of geocaching for the
two of us! It's too bad though, it should be longer...I've known
about geocaching since 2005, but didn't get the GPS until August
15th, 2009, its just all thanks to the Travel Channel. I happened
to catch a show titled "World's Greatest Hidden Treasures" where
there was a 15 minute segment about geocaching and all the wonder
associated with it. However, being only 15 at the time, I lacked
the funds to afford a GPS, and thus after a month the idea was
forgotten...Flash forward 4 years and it gets brought back into my
life when my aunt hands me a Garmin etrex lengend. She tells me all
about it, saying she was told by a fellow cacher with whom she
works, Woodliqour (we’ve never actually met eachother), and
we head out to find our first caches. The very first one being
Wadonga’s “Constitutional View” GC1QG2B (now
archived) in front of the Central Brevard County Library. I was
instantly hooked!
Ironically on the same day I started caching, I could have been
introduced to several other cachers, as there was an event going on
that we ended up missing by less than an hour. Capn Jack’s
& Fegan’s Cache a Star Event. Two days later on August
17th I was talking to a good friend of mine, FallenFromGrace47
between some of our classes since it was actually the first day of
another semester at BCC. Shortly thereafter we were en route to
“Cocoa Manors First” GCQ1E8, FallenFromGrace47’s
first find. She became as addicted as I was!
Having missed the Cache a Star Event, the two of us were forced
to wait another month until Dale n Barb posted an event, the Friday
Night Geo-Junk Drop Meet & Greet. Arriving there we were unsure
what to expect…’Were these people going to be normal,
or were they going to be eccentric and awkward to talk to?”
“How many people were going to be there?” What to
expect? What to expect? Come to find out, everyone was very
enjoyable, we met Dale n Barb, The Seastars & Tony’s
Girl, Bootscootin, The Jailbirds, Imtomcat & Wife,
DudeswithJeeps, The1acwright, Efrodo, Sam-Wise, and a few others. I
believe on that day we became members of the SCGA or at least at
some point during the past year...I hope...
Through the course of this year, the two of us have hidden about
20 caches (a few some people say are wonderful, but others not so
much), attended 13 events, met people good and bad, some of which
we’ve made good friends with, others enemies, and each of us
have gained about, give or take, 400 smileys. However, above all
else, I cannot describe to everyone how much geocaching has had an
impact on our lives, we’ve just seen so much that was new to
us even though the two of us have lived in countdown county since
birth. I’m not sure where we would be right now without
geocaching. More than likely the shut-in recluse’s we were
before…maybe.
So basically the two of us have decided to host a one year
Geo-anniversary event at Dog’s Sports Bar &
Grill…usually that’s Dale n Barb’s area of
expertise, but I don’t think they’ll mind if we host it
in the same spot we met everyone in the first place. I hope
everyone can make it to the event, sorry about only the two week
notice, but I have faith…maybe they’ll even be some
brand new cachers attend. That would be nice…
Also, before I forget. I plan on placing a puzzle cache on or
around August 15th to mark the occasion, i'm just not sure where
yet. Be prepared for it!
