Geocache Description:

Nice bedroom community of the past. This Historic Community used to be the junction of two railroads. Nice old store buildings and churches with an excellent recreational lake nearby. This is NOT a part of the PowerTrail, do NOT log it as such. I appreciate a real log here, not a copy and paste.

Standing Rock, AL used to be the northern terminus of the Chattahoochee Valley Railroad, and the southern end was at Bleecker, AL. At Standing Rock you could board the Atlanta, Birmingham and Coast Railroad to travel all over the east and quickly to Birmingham through nearby Roanoke, AL. At Bleecker you could connect to the Central of Georgia Railway and the Studebaker Bus Line. Some of the other stations were at Adams, West Point, Shawmut, Fairfax and Riverview. The general store would have sold things such as Altoids and other fine commodities and needs of the day. The town got its name from the Rock that obtrusively stood taller than the other rock around it. It actually was broken off at one time in the past from its mother rock below ground when struck by a large vehicle. The community could not live with that so they concreted back to the mother rock. A truck tire is around the base and used to be painted Red White and Blue. While visiting this small community you will notice three old buildings on the corners and a metal building on the NW corner. The NE corner was the Post Office and General Store until it moved across the street in the form of just boxes. The SW corner was a large mercantile and bank. The bank portion on the corner still has the vault and teller cage from days gone by. The SW corner was a livery and later a grocer and then an auction house. Down the street to the south is where the Chattahoochee Valley Railroad connected to the AB&C Railroad. All that is left is a wood yard. The road to the north takes you past an old Union Soldiers headquarters and cemetery and used to cross the Wehadkee creek to McCosh’s Mill. Enjoy your visit to a Historic Community.
