Enjoy this historic juncture of the Grand Erie Canal, as you make your way near the Seaway Trail.

AT 9:00 AM on the twenty-sixth day of October, eighteen and twenty five, the Grand Erie Canal was officially opened. In Buffalo at the foot of Main Street, Governor DeWitt Clinton boarded the packet boat “Seneca Chief”, which was elegantly outfitted for the trip to New York City. When the Seneca Chief, with the governor aboard, arrived in Pendleton at the intersection of Tonawanda Creek and the Grand Erie Canal, the packet boat “William C. Bouck”, met the governor with a delegation from Lockport aboard. The flotilla of boats proceeded to Lockport for a gala celebration.

Please see the monument of this occasion located nearby at N 43*05.119, W 078*44.046.

This is the first in the changes in the canal from using existing waterways to the man-made canal. Looking from the bridge one side to the other, you will see the difference.
