Geocache Description:

Hydra in the Saronic Gulf is one of the closest islands to Athen and is perhaps the most beautiful harbor in the Greek Islands.

It is a very popular island because of its extremely picturesque capital, full of red-tiled houses and stone-paved narrow alleys, showing maybe more venetian than greek influence. It used to be the destination of fashionable artists during the sixties and has kept a highly cosmopolitan character.

History

Hydra has been inhabited since pre historic times, and some believe it was the home of the Hydra - the horrible monster Heracles killed, thus its name.

Not much is known about the island's ancient history, but it played an important role in the 15th century, when people from the mainland and the islands sought refuge here from attacking pirates and Turks.

Hydra had an important fleet in the 18th century and it was sometimes called "Little England" because of its European flare and commerce. It was one of the strongest island during the war of Independence which began in 1821, and contributed with its huge fleet of 130 ships.

The cache is close to the statue on this picture. Be carefull not to fall down, the rocks may be slippery or dusty! Don't try to climb up from below, you can easily enter the plattform with the cannons over the stairs!

You are searching for a PETling with a green geocaching sticker INSIDE the most eastern cannon on the north side of the battery and hidden BEHIND A STONE in the barrel!

There are only three cannons which can be accessed by climbing onto the rocks outside of the wall. Two of these cannons can be seen from the port, but the one with the cache inside cannot. Be careful or use climbing equipment to secure yourself!

No pen inside!

Small note on cache maintenance: YiannisP has graciously offered to help. Thanks!
