A 35mm film canister hidden on top of Hamhill. The view from the hill is amazing and well worth a visit. Can be done as a cache and dash but spending longer on the hill is highly recommended. The cache is located just off the A303 and Hamhill can serve as an ideal stop on longer journeys. Please remember to bring a pen/pencil and rehide carefully.
Hamhill is an Iron age hill fort with a long history. The story begins in a warm tropical Jurassic sea. This deposited a sandy Limestone. There are a few fossils present but these are very uncommon The hillfort covered the entire hill top and was occupied until the Romans stormed the fort during the conquest of Britain. A Roman Villa is also present on the hill though at the other end near Montacute. More recently the hill was the source of the golden stone used to construct many of the local buildings. This industrial usage has left its mark on the land with the large humps and hollows being the remains of spoil tips in the area. Towards the war memorial re-excavation of these to recover the stone is ongoing. The Prince of Wales pub is the last remaining building of a small community, where the miners lived. Now the quarrying is restricted to re-excavation of spoil tips and a small quarry to the south. The area is a country park and provides an interesting area for both young and old. There is often an ice-cream van over the summer and the Prince of Wales is open all year. There is plenty of parking all over the hill. There is plenty of open space and wooded areas within easy walking distance. The ice cream van does some amazing ice creams. Cache placed with the kind permission of the Hamhill country park ranger service. This is cache number two on this site. The first was a nano on the bench. The bench is still well worth a sit on.
