My son and I placed this cache a few miles into the Arctic Circle. There were a few others near the circle marker, but at the rate the circle is migrating northward in AK (44m/yr), we wanted to make sure it stayed in the circle for some time.
This should be an easy find at marker 117. Perhaps another visitor can secure the bottle to the mooring line better – we were parked stupidly and it was placed hastily.
This cache has a log and a travel bug in it – Polar Pete the Penguin’s mission is to reach the south pole (where penguins *actually* live).
If you’ve made it this far north, I’m sure you’re having a great time. If you’re reading this before a visit to the haul road, here are a few tips to make it enjoyable:
• Take spare water and TP – they are precious
• Gas up at the Yukon River Camp; the circle is 90 mins (60mi) north of there
• Fairbanks to the Arctic Circle = 190 miles (the sign in Fairbanks is for a town called Circle, 156 miles NE)
• Average *sensible* summer speed on the haul road is about 40-50mph
• Watch your speed *down hill*, and watch for loose gravel (particularly at Sandhill)
• Slow down (and give way to trucks); your windshield will thank you
• 2/3 of the road is paved; the rest is packed mud/stone. Most of it is quite good (summer 2010), subject to re-grating as needed
• We left FB at 9AM, returned to FB at 10:30PM; ½ hr lunch; 1 hr geocaching; ½ hr hiking at sites
• Take lots of pictures – the taiga is beautiful! Take pics both North and South, each leg of the trip as the illumination makes it look different depending on direct lighting and backlighting; take more than one camera, and take batteries
• Side Note: IF you really want to see moose, head east out of FB toward Chena Hotprings. Watch for the small boggy ponds/lakes left and right past mile 25 or so. Moose like to eat the plants on the bottom of the ponds/lakes (more ponds than lakes).
