Geocache Description:

This is within Camp Pet-O-Se-Ga property and is located at a lean-to. You have to walk on a snowmobile trail that is mostly covered in ferns.

You could hike from the campground, but you would have to bushwhack through some marshy areas and tall weeds over the gas pipeline clearing. If you want to go this way, use the river trail to waypoint N45° 23.530 W84° 44.066 then go north on the pipeline. Or you can park on the side of the road at this waypoint N45° 23.888 W84° 43.803 (look at photo) and walk in on the trail. Some of this is a snowmobile trail and is mostly ferns.

The cache is an ammo box with items that may keep the kids active on a rainy camping day and also some geocoins.

Camp Pet-O-Se-Ga was constructed by Jim Templin in the 1930's. Established as a boys camp, the young men were instructed in a variety of activities including: athletics, archery, riflery, orienteering camping and aviation.

Emmet County purchased the property in 1992 to be used as a county park and, while adding modern amenities, has preserved the historic atmosphere of the camp. The park encompasses some 300 acres and offers year round recreation to visitors. There are marked nature trails throughout the park, a swimming beach on Pickerel Lake and trout fishing on Cedar Creek which bisects the property.

This location is at a lean-to that was built many years ago and for the most part is still standing. Take some time and check out the fire ring and stone table. For more history on Jim Templin and Camp Pet-O-Se-Ga, search YouTube for Jim 'Chief' Templin, there are two interesting videos there that document the history of Camp Pet-O-Se-Ga. Also, adjoined to Cabin D in the campground is a Museum of the camp. It is not always open, you may need to check with a park attendant.
