Geocache Description:

This is a Multi-Cache where the coordinates given will take you to the first cache which contains the coordinates for the final cache. Both caches are located near to the Rath. I have rated the terrain as a 2.5 due to the steep grass mounds so it may be unsuitable for wheelchair users. Also the potential for waterlogged ground is high. Difficulty is a 3 due to the nature of the first cache.

Watch out for barbed wire around the site and the caches.

Duneight Motte and Bailey consists of two mounds of earth with a deep gulley separating them from yet another mound which was used for grazing animals, when this was used as a settlement in the 14th and 15th Centuries. The lower level was used as living quarters while the higher level was used as a fortress in case of attack. The lower mound was completely surrounded by trees until 1948 and these trees also served as protection for the settlement. At one time there was a moat which ran right round these two mounds; this also was for protection. This moat was formed by part of the river which runs past the village of Ravarnette.

In 1958 and 1959 the lower mound was excavated and some pottery and ancient weapons were found. These are now in the Ulster Museum. This Monument is fenced off now and there is a path which runs from the road to the Monument.

The first cache is disguised and contains just the coordinates for the final cache. Please do not sign the first cache as it is there for information purposes only.

The final cache is a medium sized box hidden from view.

The final cache has room for swaps which can be taken as long as something of equal or greater value is put in its place.

There is a log book and pencil included but best practice would be to bring your own incase it is missing.

Muggles should be rare but watch out for dog's dirt on the ground left by irresponsible dog owners!

Use the Waypoint for a parking place. The road is quite narrow so please park close to the verge and watch out for passing motorists.
