This cache is on Motuotau Island, just off Mt Maunganui beach.
Motuotau Island is commonly called Rabbit Island but most people who visit it or look closely think it should be called Pigeon Island because it seems that it is the home of all the local pigeons.
The Island is a frequent visiting place for kayakers and my recommendation for a fantastic local paddle is to launch at Pilot Bay and paddle around the mount on a suitable tide and then wander through the many rocky islands which are close to shore and feature many sea bird species and also seals and occasionally Dolphins and Orcas. "Rabbit Island itself has some great rock features including a large cave which is not visible from the mainland.
The Island is a nature reserve managed by DOC and is home to many bird species including Dotterel. Therefore it is VERY IMPORTANT to minimise human impact on the island. The cache is in an easy place to walk to once on the islands only beach.
Please do not climb any banks or cliffs. Birds are nesting in the ground here and can be easily crushed.
The island is easily reached by kayak, boat, surfboard etc in fine weather and calm sea conditions. Some divers with fins on even swim from the shore/beach out to the island to spear fish there.
HOWEVER this cache should NOT be attempted without sound knowledge and understanding of the dangers of crossing open sea or without adequate safety equipment.
The cache container is a small plastic pot of our usual type, just big enough for a notebook and pencil and maybe a few small items.
It is hidden in a natural rock crevice and lightly covered.
The co-ordinates are of the beach, only safe kayak landing spot, good picnic place.
