This is an exploratory pit, opened before 1859. The mine was named
after the Herbert family who lived nearby. When asked about the
mine, he said, “Oh, it’s about the size of my kitchen”. I guess
Herb was not too bright. Anyway, the cache is hidden between some
rocks on top of the mine.
Set this cache with some friends from Scout Troop 565. Stayed
overnight at the West Mountain shelter (41 16.941 74 00.545). This
is my favorite shelter at Harriman. Had a clear view of Manhattan
all night. UPDATE!!!! 10/21/06 This cache has been overhauled and
updated thanks to galla2. Here is the info: The cache has been
updated including with a travel bug and is ready to be found. A
suggested route would be to begin on the Timp Pass Trail, N41
16.951 W74 00.046 and aim yourself directly for the cache. The
route up is on a 150 year old road, a little difficult to spot, but
an easy up if you're in shape. The cache is in a wine-red painted
ammo can higher and to the right of the Herbert Mine in a rock
crevice. Your GPS might be off by as much as 25 feet. Just put it
away and look for the cache among the rocks. It's an easy find once
you make the journey up.
