Geocache Description:

UPDATE: Stealth Stealth Stealth! Look out for muggles in hard hats and high-vis vests, even among the trees nearby. This remote glade is not as remote as it once was, with multiple construction works in full swing... including an entirely new train station about 20m away! Soon to be a 'park' and grab!! Please re-hide well out of sight.

One of the more northern parts of Auckland Domain, overlooking what was once the infamous Carlaw Park rugby league ground. In the 1880s the Chinese community bought the land from the Government for $1. In 1920 Auckland Rugby League leased the ground and then bought it in the 1970s, but the last game was played there in 2002 and the stadium remained unused till its recent demolition and redevelopment. Although the stadium was derelict and literally overgrown for 7 years it was at one stage considered for the role of Stadium New Zealand, for the Rugby World Cup 2011, but Eden Park was eventually chosen instead. The site is now an award winning commercial development.

About 100m along a track south of GZ is a view across the railway line to Mainline Steam, who run occasional vintage steam excursions around the country. Packed into the large shed are half a dozen steam locomotives of various sizes and in various stages of repair, and you can wander through and chat to the engineers at work for a small donation. UPDATE: with the construction of the new railway platform comes the unfortunate destruction of Mainline Steam in Parnel. More information on where they are moving to here: (visit link)

If you're crossing the tracks to get here, best to do this through the pedestrian tunnel near 'TRAINSPOTTING - off the tracks' cache. There is also a sneaky entrance to the domain from the Grafton side, if you know where to look although bushbashing from Lower Domain Dr. is a slightly more adventurous option.
