Rosstown Rail Trail #3 Oakleigh Road Reserve Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

YugiTea559: These caches have been a great series and we are very sorry that we are archiving them. We have been lazy in maintaining these caches and I think this is the best decision.

Geocache Description:

This is cache #3 of a series of 7, along the Rosstown Rail Trail, and is a 200ml Sistema container, in an fairly easy-to-access, but tricky, hide.
It is an 8.5km family-friendly bike ride, from Hughesdale to Elsternwick Stations, and will take 3-4 hours including search time. Caches are as big as possible, to allow swaps for kids.

This is part of an 8.5km trail from Hughesdale Station to Elsternwick Station. You can catch a train from the City to either end, and make your way to the other. It will take you about 3-4 hours by bicycle, including the time looking for the 7 geocaches. It is a family-friendly ride, especially from East to West, so we have tried to make the containers as big as possible, ensuring there should be plenty of swaps for the geo-kids

The line was built by a private businessman, William Ross, a local entrepeneur after whom Rosstown was named. This name now only appears on the local electoral roll, (and the pub!), and the suburb is know as Carnegie.

It was constructed in September 1883 and was completed November that same year. But shoddy workmanship and inferior materials prevented official approval being given for its use. It was four years before construction was resumed in 1887, which culminated in the improved and completed railway in 1888.

Ross said that he ran a train from one end to the other but this has never been proven, and it's demise was fairly quick.

If you follow the trail from Elsternwick to Oakleigh you will see how its presence affected the layout of the present streets, especially as it curves gently around Murrumbeena Crescent and into Galbally Reserve.

The cache is a 200ml Sistema container.
