Geocache Description:

Lukey Heights - the pinnicle of the Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit is named after the circuits saviour - Len Lukey

Len Lukey purchased the Phillip Island circuit from the Phillip Island Auto Racing Club in 1964 after the club could not afford repairs after the third running of the Armstrong 500 - what is now Australia's most famous race. Lukey allowed the club to continue to operate at the circuit, maintaining Phillip Island car and motorbike racing, until Lukey's death in 1978. The circuit became idle after this time, reverting to a sheep farm, until the Motorcycle Grand Prix came into fruition in 1989. From this point the circuit has grown in use and standing in the international motor racing community. It is widely regarded as the best permanent race track in the country and continues to improve on safety standards year in year out.
