Sirius is the brightest star in the constellation Canis Major. Sirius is actually two stars, a white star named Sirius A and a white dwarf named Sirius B. The star Sirius was once believed to be the cause of the summers heat as the constellation Canis Major was prominent in the late summer sky. It is where the term "The dog days of summer" stems from.
The poet Homer mentions Sirius in his classic poem "The Illiad"
"Sirius rises late in the dark, liquid sky
On summer nights, star of stars,
Orion's Dog they call it, brightest
Of all, but an evil portent, bringing heat
And fevers to suffering humanity."
This cache was placed during the dog days of summer. The heat index was 115 ° F! Curse you dog star!
Please be careful retrieving the cache as there is a steep drop off to the creek below just a few feet east of ground zero.
