The Commons 1: The Cross and the Bell Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Doctor Pat: As I no longer live nearby, and maintenance is difficult, I have started to archive some of this series as they go missing, giving others the opportunity to put our new caches if they so wish. This was my first ever cache placed and it has done its duty well so deserves a rest! Thank you for taking the trouble to look for it.

Geocache Description:

This is the first cache of two small linked circuits near Kington Langley and is a nano.

The village of Kington Langley is about 1.5 miles long from one end to the other and stands on a small hill near Chippenham. It has three Commons: Upper, Middle and Lower Common.

One famous local resident was Norris Dewar McWhirter who, with his identical twin brother Ross, was editor of the Guinness Book of Records and appeared on the BBC children’s television show “Record Breakers” from the 1970s to early 1990s. Norris died in April 2004 aged 78, following a tennis match at his home in Kington Langley.

The Hit or Miss Inn is conveniently placed in the heart of the village (for those needing refreshment) and can claim David Cameron as a client before he became Prime Minister. NB: update on June 2017: the inn is now closed so please ignore advice above. The suggested parking place is about 200 metres walk from the Inn.

This series has two linked circuits forming a rough figure of eight around Upper, Middle and Lower Commons in Kington Langley.

This first part (the southern circuit) uses local footpaths which are over grown in places, with wobbly and/or some broken styles, so not accessible (sorry) by wheels, buggies etc. This is horsey country, so dogs on leads please.

For each of the four caches on this southern circuit (and also on the northern circuit which has caches 5-9), don't forget to collect your clues to the bonus cache. To find the bonus, you will need to have completed both circuits - but please note that there is not a clue in every cache on this circuit. NB: As of June 2017, the bonus is archived as many clues and some caches are missing, sorry.

The clues for collection from this first cache are on the sign, behind which the cache is hidden. These numbers are: D, E, F and G.

D = The number of letters on the sign minus the "Cs"
E = How many "P"s?
F = How many "N"s?
G = How many "R"s?

THE CACHE IS NOT HIDDEN IN THE WALL - (PLEASE DO NOT PULL STONES FROM THE WALL, IT IS NOT NECESSARY)

This is our first ever cache series, so hope you enjoy.
