Geocache Description:

An easy puzzle cache sung to the tune of “Riding on the City of New Orleans.”

The cache is not at the posted coordinates.

If you enter them in Google Earth, you can see photos of a roundhouse and turntable for the trainyards not far from the real location of the cache.

You will find it at N44° AB.CDE, W73° VW.XYZ.

St. Albans was known as “Railroad City” in its days as the operations center of the Central Vermont Railroad, a period that brought wealth and many good jobs to the town. It is the shire town of Franklin county and has excellent Victorian architecture. Check out the west side of stately Taylor Park. It has also produced an unusually high number of distinguished citizens for a city of its size.

Just answer a few simple questions and do a little math for me, if you please, and you’ll have the coordinates you desire.

1. The city of St. Albans is bordered by how many towns?

2. A race to Swanton is part of the city’s Maple Festival. What is the length of that race in miles? (Round to the nearest whole number.)

3. The northernmost engagement of the Civil War took place in St. Albans on what date? We’ll call the month 3a, the day 3b, and the year 3c.

4. St. Albans was granted a charter by New Hampshire’s Governor Benning Wentworth on what date? We’ll use the same abc format as in answer three.

5. How many grantees shared the charter?

6. Some of the streets in St. Albans have route numbers. Main Street is US __.

7. What is the area of the city of St. Albans?

8. How many congressmen are listed under Wikipedia’s Notable People heading (not counting senators who were not also congressmen)?

9. How many horse thieves and outlaws (again—not counting senators)?

10. Okay, now how many senators?

11. How many poets?

12. How many magicians?

13. How many major generals?

14. How many years was it from the granting of the charter to the first settlement in St. Albans? (Use the settlement date in the box below the settlement map, please.)

15. Lake Street is Vermont route __.

16. Lower Newton Street is Vermont route ___.

So much for my questions, now for the arithmetic. To obtain your coordinates, perform these calculations, using your answers from each question as directed:

A = 10 + 1 - 12

B = the square root of 5

C = 8 + 9

D = 16 -15

E = 11 cubed

V = 3c - 4c – 12 – the square of 3a

W = the square root of (15 - 14)

X = 6 + 7

Y = the fourth root of (15 - 14)

Z = 11
