Geocache Description:

This is another cache in our series based on interesting features we have seen on maps. In this case the cache is situated in the Langlands Moss Local Nature Reserve.

Langlands Moss is a lowland raised peat bog. It was established as a Local Nature Reserve within South Lanarkshire in 1996 and is supported by the Friends of Langlands Moss LNR (visit link) working in partnership with South Lanarkshire Council and various conservation groups.

The bog itself is a fascintating place with a long history, having been formed at the end of the last Ice Age by the ice creating a depression that filled up with water as the ice melted. Over the years this would have filled with decomposing vegetation eventually forming peat which is now up to 10 metres thick! For a much better explanation than mine, go to (visit link) where the FOLM provide much better descriptions!

The reason for the name of the cache? Well, early in 2010, the skeleton of a huge dinosaur was unearthed in the bog by volunteers working as part of the FOLM group. The dinsoaur is thought to be up to 64 million years old. Read all about it here (visit link) or here (visit link) .

When going to look for this cache, please do not stray from the boardwalk across the bog. There is no need to leave the boardwalk across the bog in order to find the cache. The bog and moss and the wildlife it supports is very sensitive as well as the bog being deep and potentially dangerous.

A very big thanks to both the Freinds of Langlands Moss and to South Lanarkshire Council for their kind permission to place the cache.

The cache itself is a regular clip lock container.
