Geocache Description:

‘Monument’ is the fifth of 6 Caches along the Wood Walk in Gee-Cross (WWGX). This is a Nano at the Millenium stone. This takes you briefly along the Trans Pennine trail, through Gower Hey Wood and back through Apethorn Fold. A Guide for the full walk has been provided in the long description. From Start directions A to U get you to this cache but could be done as a quick drive by cache alone. Please just date and Initial cache.

Wood Walk – Gee-Cross (WWGX)

A. Park at bottom of Apethorn Lane at N 53. 26.397’, W 02.05.310’.

B. From parking location walk down informal road heading East.

C. Walk down road and there is a Railway Bridge on the right.

D. Walk under bridge and follow path to the right (uphill slope with horse tracks usually) to the top.

E. As you come to top of slope bear left and follow sign for Trans Pennine Trail. Follow sign to Broadbottom.

F. Continue to follow trail until you reach the next bridge.

G. Follow trail and pass under a road bridge (Dowson Road above) shortly after which the entrance to Gower Hey Wood is on the right.

** From this point can navigate to 'WWGX Turntable' N53.26.919', W02.03.251' and return to this point to continue **

H. Walk through entrance in wooden fence.

I. Walk down the steps into the wood and walk across the boardwalk at the bottom and continue on trail.

J. Follow path and you will come to the end of a stream draining into a grate. Continue and keep the stream to your right.

K. Pass a small wooden bridge and continue up gentle slope keeping stream to you right.

L. Pass a second wooden walk over stream and continue uphill.

M. Come to a small wooden direction post (also known as poo sign)

N. Down to your right you will see another wooden bridge. Walk down six steps to bridge.

O. From bridge follow path and steps uphill to a small field.

P. You enter the field from the West and exit from South Corner of field (or top right corner as you enter it).

Q. Follow the 7 steps down, Follow path and bridge over stream and up to another field.

R. You will see a Gower Wood Sign and from here head in SW direction towards Dowson School sign and continue board walk which takes you to public right of way between school buildings.

S. Turn Right onto footpath and down to Marlborough road. Turn Left onto Marlborough Road.

T. Carefully cross road at top of Marlborough Road and walk down Sandringham Road, turning left at bottom onto Windsor Road leading to Dowson Road.

U. Turn Left onto Dowson Road.

V. At the crossing, cross Dowson Road and walk down Apethorn Lane.

W. Walk to the bottom of Apethorn Lane, passing the Apethorn farmhouse and the ‘Balamory houses’ to return to the Parking GPS location N53.26.397’, W02.05.310.
