Le village de La Cavalerie se situe au carrefour des routes antiques, des voies de pèlerinage et aujourd'hui de l'autoroute A75 et de la nationale 9. Au cœur de la riche Plaine du Temple, les Templiers ont su aussi profiter de sa situation stratégique de nœud de communication s'ouvrant sur le sud et les ports d'embarquement pour la Terre Sainte.
La commanderie fut fondée en 1154. A l'origine, les Templiers avaient édifié deux ville : La Cavalerie Vieille et La Cavalerie Neuve. La première fut complètement détruite au XIIIe siècle.Vers 1307, l'ordre des Hospitaliers de Saint-Jean de Jérusalem reçurent La Cavalerie et entreprirent de fortifier la ville pendant la Guerre de Cent Ans. Toutefois au XVIe et XVIIe siècle, le village fut pris par les Huguenots et ceux-ci détruisirent le château en 1580.La grande enceinte subira les ravages des guerres de religion. Les remparts ont servi, depuis la Révolution, de matériau de construction pour les maisons.
Aujourd'hui d’importants travaux de reconstruction et de réhabilitation ont été entrepris.

The village of La Cavalerie is situated in the crossroads of the antique roads, the ways of pilgrimage and today the highway A75 and the national 9. In the heart of the rich Plain of the Temple, the Knight Templars knew also how to take advantage of the strategic situation of knot of communication opening on the South and the ports of embarkation for the Holy Land.
The commanderie was based(established) in 1154. Originally, the Knight Templars had built two city : La Cavalerie vielle and La Cavalerie Neuve. The first one was completely destroyed in the XIIIth century. By 1307, the order of Saint Jean's hospital workers of Jerusalem received La Cavalerie and began to strengthen the city during the Hundred Years' War. However in the XVIth and XVIIth century, the village was taken by the Huguenots and these destroyed the castle in 1580. The big surrounding wall will undergo the devastation of the religious wars. Ramparts served, since the Revolution, as material of construction for houses.
Today important works of reconstruction and rehabilitation were begun.
