How Geocaching Works

Please note Use of geocaching.com services is subject to the terms and conditions in our disclaimer.

Geocache Description:

Ground Zero is near a kissing gate - the cache is about 5m
to the right, in a pile of rocks where an old house possibly used to
stand. Please cover it back up as the path is used daily by dog-walkers.

There is a clearly defined, uphill path.

Unfortunately, the terrain is not wheelchair and puchchair friendly.

Dogs and horses are very welcome, you may even see some on your walk.

This cache is accessible through the hamlet of Dean, just off the A361. It is a short walk away from the parking areas, and could be a nice quick stretch of the legs if driving past.

Parking is available at the bottom of 'Dallimore Lane', by the pavement, or very limited parking is available at the bottom of 'The Rocks'. Please keep the whole lane free - as large vehicles may need to access Dean Farm. Please do not park in front of the workshop, as access is needed almost daily)

The walk takes you 0.5KM on a tree-lined bridlepath, past the remains of dwellings and on an original pathway used pre 1922 as a route from Shepton Mallet to Frome.

The village of Dean first entered the history books in the 17th century, when the Smithy (at the bottom of Dallimore Lane, with the postbox in the wall, now called The Old Smithy) and Dean Farmhouse (at the very top of Dallimore Lane, this walk does not take you past it) was built. Dean did however exist before that as a collection of small houses on the road, now called The Rocks due to the rock that was placed there to allow carts to be easily pulled up and down the hill. These rocks are still visible in places - but can be slippery when wet!

The container is a small, clear plastic pot hidden under 3 stones at GZ. It has space for small swappables and contains a Pound Coin as a prize for FTF. There is an included pencil. Please push the lid on tightly to avoid damp getting in.

If you have more time, the pathway will take you into a large wooded area above Cranmore Tower, which is very picturesque and ideal for a picnic, but please stay close to the paths as there is an archery school, which you will see signs of. If you go through the kissing gate, there is a field with amazing views and access to the tower if you keep heading uphill. There is also another Geocache near the tower.

As there is tree cover, your GPS may not function 100% accurately. It is advisable to read the hint. If you are decrypting manually, the first line is less of a hint than the second.

I'm currently looking for people who might be able to help look after my caches whilst I'm away undertaking a doctorate. If you think you might be able to help, please do let me know by contacting me at geocachingjohn@googlemail.com (If you can't help maintain them long term, it would be wonderful if you could take along some spare logs/pencils/etc. to keep these caches alive, just in case).
