Geocache Description:

The Niagara River flows north from Lake Erie to Lake Ontario. It forms part of the border between the Province of Ontario in Canada and New York State in the United States. The river, which is occasionally described as a strait, is about 56 kilometres (35 mi) long and includes Niagara Falls in its course.

There are over forty islands in the Niagara River, all in the upper river above Niagara Falls. These islands range in size from a mere resting place for sea gulls to Grand Island, which is five square miles larger than Manhattan. Tonawanda Island is the island closest to North Tonawanda. The original owners of Tonawanda Island, the Seneca Indians, gave it the name “Ni-ga-we-nah-a-ah” or “The Small Island.” This cache is located on the northern end of the island. This spot was chose for it’s proximity to the water more so than the difficulty of the hide. Take a moment to look out over the river that makes up part of the Great Lakes Seaway Trail while you’re there!

This cache is placed as part of the Great Lakes Seaway Trail Geotrail, located within the Buffalo / Niagara Falls Region. There are 15 caches hidden within this region, and geocachers finding ten or more Great Lakes Seaway Trail Geotrail caches within this region can earn a free Buffalo / Niagara Falls Region geocoin. If you are interested in participating in the Geotrail, please visit www.seawaytrail.com/geotrail for a list of locations where you can pick up a free copy of the official Great Lakes Seaway Trail Geotrail Logbook.

This cache contains a unique hole punch which must stay with the cache. Use this hole punch in space # 8 on the Buffalo / Niagara Falls Region page of your Official Great Lakes Seaway Trail Logbook. This hole punch is NOT a trade item. There is a Seaway Trail guidebook as a FTF prize.

Congratulations to FLASH Jr. 373 and FLASH 777 on the (not surprising) FTF.
