Geocache Description:

Perkins Woods is a very unique piece of land because it is the only surviving patch of swamp forest in Illinois. It's the smallest forest preserve I've ever seen.

„Architect Dwight Heald Perkins moved to Evanston in 1904, an important event in the history of the Big Woods. Called the father of the Cook County Forest Preserve District, he was instrumental in creating the district and guiding it in its early years. Among the properties he sought to protect was a 7.8-acre tract in north Evanston, bounded by the streets Grant and Colfax and the avenues Bennett and Ewing. In May 1918 the district purchased the land for $ 35,000; seven years after Perkins‘s death in 1941, the district formally named the parcel Perkins Woods.
...
Perkins Woods has suffered the damage associated with being an urban park. For a site so small, it is laced with trails including a few official ones that are paved (in excess of five feet including mowed edges) and numerous footpaths. In 1966 concern for public safety led to massive cutting of the understory. Dutch elm disease cleared the woods of some of its oldest and largest members, although fine specimens remain. Despite these and other impacts, Perkins Woods has retained almost all of its arboreal diversity.“

Perkins was a prairie style architect. He designed and built his own home located at 2319 Lincoln St in 1904, now known as the Dwight H. Perkins House.
Edit May 2012: If you can spare a $1.6 Mio you might want to purchase this beautiful house. It's for sale: www.bairdwarner.com/property/14941479/
Edit April 2013: $1.3 Mio

Another work by Perkins is the Lincoln Park Zoo Lion House.

There is plenty of street parking. Be aware that Perkins Woods is next to a school and there may be kids around.

The cache is a small painted plastic container, however, it is large enough to hold small trackable items and trinkets. I placed the cache pretty close to the path because the whole area can be flooded, depending on weather and time of year. You'll need a tool in order to reach the cache, but don't worry, I'm sure you'll find one nearby.

Wear bug spray! It would have been useful when I placed the cache! ... swamp forest ...

I placed a Munzee in this cache. Scan the QR code to play this fun game! Please don't remove the Munzee from the lid!
