Geocache Description:

Located just outside the grounds of the railway station, this is a drive by with plenty of parking space. It is a small container that could take small travel bugs and coins as well as small toys.

Ask yourself why does an unmanned rural railway station have such a large car park and why is there such a large impressive hotel, the Goshawk, just opposite?

The answer is to be found in the early railway age. Mouldsworth was an important railway junction and the hotel, then named ‘the Station’ was built by the railway company.

The West Cheshire Railway Company hoped to build a line from Northwich to Chester in 1861, but only received Parliamentary permission to build a line to Helsby where it linked with Birkenhead and eventually the Brunner Mond chemical works – ICI - via Mouldsworth. (All railway development had to be sanctioned by Act of Parliament – a long and costly business)

It was not until 1875 that passenger trains from Northwich were re-routed south from Mouldsworth to operate along the newly opened line to Chester Northgate Station.

The cache was placed to celebrate the wedding of Nick & Zelia in St. Cuthbert's church close to the cache site. The cache was placed by the father, brother and nephew of the groom. A celebratory geocoin was also left in the box to start its travels. Please replace carefully as there is a risk of muggles from the Goshawk pub opposite. The Goshawk is well worth a visit.
