Geocache Description:

This cache celebrates the rich and diverse history of the Bullhead
City area.

The City of Bullhead City is a relatively young city, having incorporated in 1984, but our community heritage reaches back into the annals of time.

Spanish explorers traveled along the Colorado River in the 1500s and first encountered the native Mojave Indians as early as 1604, whose ancestors had dwelled in the area for a millennium. Although contact was seldom and brief in the beginning, by the 1800s there was greater activity and interaction with trappers, missionaries, surveyors and other Anglo-American travelers. By the mid-1800s, steamboats were navigating the Colorado River and Hardyville was established at the site of present-day Bullhead City. Serving as a trading post and freight depot, Hardyville was the first county seat.

Hardyville was the northern-most river port along the Lower Colorado, but it soon met its demise when fire twice devastated the settlement and the railroad bypassed it 20 miles to the south in favor of Needles, California. Today, all that remains of Hardyville is the stone monument in the Safeway parking lot and the Historic Hardyville Cemetery across the street.

In those early days, riverboat captains used a large bull-head shaped rock as a navigation landmark (it was really an island in the middle of the river). When Davis Dam was built in the 1940s, it was “bulls head” rock that inspired the name of the camp that was founded for the construction workers. Gold was discovered in 1900 and Katherine Gold Mine (named for the sister of one of the discoverers) just north of Bullhead City operated until 1940. The Bullhead City Elementary School District was founded in 1948 with a one-room Little Red School House located on 3rd Street in Old Bullhead, which is still used today for special music classes. Today, the District teaches the youth of the community in five elementary and two junior high schools.

While you’re here, go inside the Council Chambers to view the mural that depicts our rich heritage. It is a beautiful work of art created in 2009 by Sandy Rusinko, sponsored by the Bullhead City Municipal Arts Commission and the Los Matadores of Bullhead City. The Council Chambers are typically open 8AM to 5PM, M-F, closed on major holidays, open later on the first and third Tuesdays of the month for regular council meetings.

All are welcome. City Manager Toby Cotter has given his permission for this cache to be placed here. The cache is located outside the building so it is available 24/7.
