When "Gorrick's Spring" flows fast
and clear, Stoop down and drink for health is here; If Gorrick's
Spring should e'er run dry, "Beware for Pestilence is nigh."
In the olden days, before mains water, the people of Calverton
and Stony Stratford used to take water from this spring.
There are a few stories associated with the spring which was
reputed to have healing powers. One such tale involved a witch who
lived on Horsefair Green (Stony Stratford). She used the water to
cure various ailments. One day she apprenticed a young girl who was
as pretty as she was ugly. The young girl was tasked with fetching
the water, daily, from the spring. One fateful day the young girl
went to the spring as usual. On this day, however, she came across
a blind gypsy boy being led by his faithful hound. She soaked a
handkerchief in the healing water and laid the cloth across his
eyes. A miracle happened; the boys' sight was restored. The young
maiden went to tell the witch of the healing powers of the water
but the old witch had departed, never to return.

Special care needs to be taken when accessing the spring. The
steps are steep and in icy conditions may be very slippery. You may
need a little bit of agility to reach GZ, or wet feet.
