Traces of volcanic and post-volcanic acrivity can be found along the wedgeshaped ridge. Sediments of hot water lakes and bubbling pools developed into hydroquartzite which overlies the basalt tuff. Blocks of displaced basalt tuff indicate former movements.

Az ék alaku hegygerinc a vulkáni és utóvulkáni muködés nyomait örzi. A bazalttufára forró vízü tavak, fortyogók üledékéböl kialakult lemezes hidrokvarcit települt. Az egykori kéregmozgásokra utal a bazalttufa-tömbök kibillent helyzete.

In the place of Lake Balaton several shallow, clean- and cold water lakes emerged at the end of the Pleistocene, about 15.000 years ago. They developed one after another, from the west to the east. As a result of the rising temperature and evolving wet climate, the water level rose and a unified water surface formed. After that the water level alterned ( between +6 m and -1 m compared to th epre-sent one ), depending on chages int he climate. Vegetation gradually increased int he originally clean water. Int he surroundings until the Holocene coniferous gallery, then deciduous forests were characteristic, depending ont he prevailing climate.
The average annual growth of the thickness of the lake sediment is ??? mm. However, it depends ont he mire-moving effect of underwater streams, the depth of the lake, the extent of the lake-surface, the climate and the offshore vegetation cover. The present amount of lake-mud int he bed of Lake Balaton is approximatley 1.5 times as big as the water content.

A Balaton helyén a jégkorszakok végén ( kb. 15.000 évvel ezelott ) több sekély, tiszta és hideg vizu tavacska alakult ki. Nyugatról kelet felé a vízzel borítottság egyre késobb következett be. A homérséklet melegedésével és az éghajlat csapadékosabbá válásával a vízszint emelkedett, a tavakat elválasztó gátak a hullámverés hatására fokozatosan eltuntek, és kb. 5000 éve kialakult az egységes vízfelület. Ezt követoen a tó vízszintje, az éghajlat változásának függvényében a mai vízszinthez képest +6 m és -1 m között változott. A tó vize kialakulásakor tiszta volt, de hamar elszaporodott benne a növényzet, melynek mennyisége a tó története során gyakran változott, de általában a mezotróf ( közepes ) állapot volt jellemzo. A tó környezetében a jégkorszak végéig tulevelu ligetes, a jelenkorban lombos erdok voltak jellemzoek.
A tavi üledékek felhalmozódási sebessége a teljes üledékvastagságra vonatkozóan átlagosan évente ??? mm. Ezt az érték konkrét helyhez kötötten azonban függ a víz alatti áramlások iszapmozgató hatásától , a tó mélységétol, a vízzel borított terület nagyságától, a víz minoségétol, továbbá az éghajlattól és a parti területek növénytakaróval borítottságától. A jelenlegi Balaton medrében felhalmozott iszap mennyisége hozzávetolegesen 1,5-szerese a víz mennyiségének.
