Situated by the Thames, an Islet dedicated to a man who spent nearly half his life making the Thames navigable. But why is this small island here? Well that is for you to think about.
Islands in the Thames are formed in a number of ways. It all depends on the energy in the river and what the ground is made of.
Fast flowing water is strong enoung to tear into a riverbank and errode the side. It then carries that sediment down river until the flow is not fast enough to hold the sediment in suspension. Islands can be formed either at the point of errosion or where the sediment is dropped.
Looking over the side of the north bridge have a look at the channel between the island and the river bank. Describe what you see at the sides of the channel. What is at the bottom of the channel? What do you think is happening to the channel. View a map of the area and with knowlegde of the width of the river, speed of the water flow and proximity to bends think how the island was formed.
