Geocache Description:

Near Obids Baptist Church

This is a cache in the Ashe County Barn Quilts series.

Ashe county is located in the corner of North Carolina that touches both Tennessee and Virginia. Ashe county highways and back roads take you through small towns, scenic hill country and peaceful valleys, along a rushing creek or the tranquil New River. You might be on a dirt road and suddenly come upon a beautiful barn quilt. Sponsored by the local arts council, these quilt blocks painted on the side of a barn or the wall of a house are a symbol of community and family, tradition and comfort.

Obids Baptist Church was organized in the late 19th century, and the present building dates from the late 1940s. It sits on a quiet knoll overlooking the community of Obids. The beautiful barn quilt “Robbing Peter To Pay Paul” can be seen from this hill. Stop and stretch for a while, taking in the beauty of this area. Stroll around and enjoy the views in all directions. Please respect the church schedule.
