February 4, 1972 The Mariner 9 sends the first pictures from Mars. It was the first spacecraft to orbit another planet, arrived at Mars a month before the Soviet 2 & 3 probes. After a month of dust-storms the Mariner 9 was able to send back clear pictures of the surface of Mars!
