Since I have always been interested in railroads, I’ve decided to start a series of caches highlighting some of the physical features that still remain of railroads that no longer exist in the central KY area.
The Brooksville Railroad was chartered in 1895, but was not completed until June of 1897 due to a lack of funding. The 10 mile-long line ran from a connection with the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad near Wellsburg to Brooksville, the county seat of Bracken County.
Like many railroads of the time, improved roadways soon led to a loss of traffic and passenger service was discontinued in 1918. In 1919, the bankrupt railroad was purchased by a group of businessmen who changed the name of the railroad to the Brooksville and Ohio Railroad. It struggled along until 1931 when abandonment was approved.
Since the line has been gone now for nearly 80 years, there are very few relics left. The bridge abutments over Locust Creek upstream from this cache placement are the most visible remnants, but there is another cache too close to put the cache there. After crossing the creek near the bridge, the line stayed on the east side of Locust Creek the rest of the way to the junction with the C&O.
The cache is a camouflaged matchstick container with a log only.. Be sure to check out the covered bridge nearby.
