Geocache Description:

Note: As you start up the road towards Shinall Mountain you will notice a large No Trespassing sign on the right. This is in reference to the private land on the right side of the road at this point. All roads up to and on Shinall Mountain are public thoroughfares.

At the cache site, if you look up and East you will see what is known as Bear Den Mountain. For the best view, go north up the road to where it "T's". There has been a lot of hearsay concerning this mountain all my life. My grandfather swore that a couple of the dens on the mountain always housed hibernating black bears in the winter (hence the name). In my climbs (in my younger days) on this mountain, during all times of the year, I never saw any evidence of that - but who am I to say!!! I can verify a couple of very large rattlesnakes, though! Another hearsay of the old timers back in the 40's, was that a bank robber from Texas had holed up in one of the dens for several months before the law found him. According to the story the man held off a large contingent of U.S. Marshalls for days, before they finally wounded him and were able to capture him. He was sent back to Texas, but no one knows what ever happen to him. In the present day, It's my understanding that some local rock climbers repel the south face of the mountain, which is quite steep. Again, hearsay - I've never witnessed this, but it is quite possible. There are probably a lot more stories about this ole mountain, but I am pretty positive that they would more than likely be all hearsay. if you've got a story of this mountain - let me hear about it!! Be safe and enjoy the cache!!!
