In 1909 three brothers arrived in Fitzhugh (Jasper) from Field and Golden. The Otto brothers ( Jack, Closson and Bruce) were guides and outfitters.
In 1911 the brothers guided a group that included Mary Schaffer. While Jack guided the group through often treacherous terrain, Closson and Bruce were sent ahead to cut a trail as it had unexpectedly snowed several feet. To dig out the trail they carved two shovels from a couple of large spruce trees. Once they were done digging out the trail they used the shovels to mark the trail head. This incident sparked the naming of Big and Little Shovel Passes on the Skyline Trail.
In accordance with Jasper National Park guidelines no trading items or things that might attract wildlife are to be left in this cache. No TB's of any kind are allowed.
