Located in Conquest NY in an old historical cemetary.
This is located on the outer boundaries of the cemetary and not near any monuments. Please be respectful of the area.
Rt 38 in the early days was a main road traveled between Fair Haven and Port Byron on the Erie Canal. The orginal canal and the newer updated version still needed to transport goods between Lake Ontario and Cananda to the Canal. Rt 38 was a dirt laneway / road that accomodated wagons of goods traveling to the waters of the canal to go east and west.
Conquest was just an interestion then with small business that catered to the wagons and travelers. The only cemetary is now home to many of the locals that settled here to scratch out a living on the flat rich farmland. According to a local gentleman I met, this cemetary is also the final resting place for workers who worked on the canal and their kin who stayed in the area. He even mentioned that this area was a haven for the underground railroad back before it was even a village or hamlet.
