Geocache Description:

This is a nano container, so please bring a pen or pencil to sign the log.

In 1920, business and political leaders in Omaha believed if the city were to become a major commercial center, it would have to establish itself as a major hub of air traffic. The Omaha Chamber of Commerce hanger at Ak-Sar-Ben field was built to accommodate the designation of Omaha, as a station along the trans-continental airmail route.
And then in 1924, U.S. postal authorities decided to move the station to Fort Crook. The military airfield was better equipped to handle night flights, which were becoming more common at that time. On June 22, 1924, before the move was complete, a tornado struck and destroyed the Chamber of Commerce hanger. This effectively ended the Ak-Sar-Ben airfield chapter, as the city moved quickly to secure a tract of land east of the city to build a future airfield.
