Another Night Cache!

Many people liked our first night cache (Two Dog Night) and we had extra tacks, so here's another one. Don't worry, you don't have to play any night time frisbee golf (or "frolf" as George Costanza likes to call it), but the cache will take you through a portion of the frisbee golf course at Winstrom Park.

The posted coordinates are between the trailhead and the parking lot. Park hours are from 7 am to 10 pm year round. Like most night caches, you will need to use your flashlight to find and follow reflective tacks that lead you to the cache. However, for this one there are two stages and the tacks will lead you only to the first stage. Here are some helpful hints:

  • Before you get started, mark the coordinates of your parking location. The final will not be near where you park so marking your parking spot will help you to get back.
  • The first tack should be visible to the south from the posted coordinates. If you don't see it immediately, follow the paved path south into the woods and you will see it.
  • Hold your flashlight at eye level and scan it back and forth to find and follow the tacks
  • Keep following the tacks until you find a pair that are positioned vertically. Stop here. You will be leaving the trail at this point, though not necessarily on the side you see the tacks.
  • A little over 100 feet off the trail, you will see another pair of tacks, this time positioned horizontally. You should be able to see them from the trail, but if your flashlight is weak you may need to venture out a little bit to see them.
  • Stage one is a regular container and is hidden within 10 feet of the horizontal tacks.
  • Stage one isn't exactly fragile, but please be careful and don't tear at the tape or otherwise damage it.
  • To get to the final, return to the trail where you found the two vertical tacks and then follow the trail (either way, your choice) out of the wooded area you are in. Then on to the final. Bushwhacking directly to the final is not necessary and could be dangerous in the dark.
  • There are no tacks marking the final, but you will not have to venture more than 20 feet into the woods to get it.
  • The final is a 5x8 lock-n-lock

Please rehide stage one well, since it is in an area frequented by hikers and frisbee golfers.

We used the same brand of tacks we did for Two Dog Night, which are difficult to see during the day but are fairly visible at dusk, so you can likely get started a little bit before dark.

As noted above, remember that park hours are from 7 am to 10 pm. The parking area is not gated, though, so you don't need to worry about getting locked in.

And also as noted above, but important enough to mention again, you should hold your flashlight at your eye level. I found that it works best if I hold the flashlight right next to my ear. If you hold the light too far from your eye level you will not see the tacks.

Things you should make sure to bring:
  • A flashlight (and a backup flashlight would be a good idea)
  • A GPSr (though some night caches don't require one, this one will)
  • Some friends. Unless you really enjoy walking in the woods alone at night.

There is a toonie in the cache as a prize for the first night-time finder.

Good luck!
