A treasure hunt around the village of Thorpeness
Until the early 20th century, Thorpeness was just another small fishing village. All that changed about 100 years ago when a Scottish barrister and railway designer called Glencairn Stuart Ogilvie bought the entire area between Aldeburgh and Sizewell and built a fantasy holiday village to which he could invite family and friends.
The homes were built in Jacobean and Tudor styles, and there was a golf course and clubhouse, and a country club with tennis courts and a swimming pool.
The most spectacular feature of Thorpeness was the “Meare”, a shallow man-made boating lake with features based on ”Peter Pan” which was written by Ogilvie's friend, J M Barrie. There are channels, landing places and islands named after locations in the story, such as the pirates' lair and Wendy's home. Boats can be hired to explore the lake, and there is a regatta with a firework display held each August.
To serve the village, a water tower was installed but clad in timber to disguise it. This structure is called The House in the Clouds. It was converted into a holiday home by removing the water tank after mains water was installed in the village in 1977. The tank in the tower was fed by a wind pump installed in a former windmill, which was relocated to Thorpeness from the nearby village of Aldringham.
After three generations of Ogilvies and their friends had owned the entire village, the estate was split up in 1972 following the death of Glencairn Ogilvie's grandson, Alexander Ogilvie, and the golf course, country club and many of the homes were sold to pay death duties. However the unusual style of the village has been maintained.
There is a public car park in the village, or you can walk here along the beach from Aldeburgh.
