Geocache Description:

Pythagoras' Travelbug & Geocoin Hotel Samos can be found after solving a riddle about Pythagoras

Dear geocacher, to find Pythagoras' Travelbug & Geocoin Hotel on Samos you have to solve a little riddle. The hotel is named after the famous philosopher Pythagoras. You will learn a little about Pythagoras who was born on Samos and you will find nice places.

The riddle:

Task 1: When Pythagoras has been living?

A1: 570-510 before Christ (5)
B1: 580-496 after Christ (3)
C1: 580-496 before Christ (1)

Hint: As reference serves the monument for Pythagoras in the city of Pythagorio (see waypoint).

Task 2: Pythagoras' formula

Pythagoras discovered a very useful mathematic formula which can be used for right-angled triangles.
Imagine: I fly with a plane from Stuttgart Airport Germany via air line to a Ukrainian city called "Nestoita". From there I fly via air line to Samos Airport.
Now I want to fly back from Samos Airport directly to Stuttgart Airport. If you now look on a map you see a right-angled triangle which connects the places.
Because I know the two distances between the two flights I can calculate the distance from Samos Airport to Stuttgart Airport with help of Pythagoras' formula: a2 + b2 = c2

How many kilometres are between Samos Airport and Stuttgart Airport?

Information:
a = 1500 km
b = 1166.19038 km
c = ?

Which distance is correct?

A2: c = 2000 km (6)
B2: c = 1900 km (4)
C2: c = 1800 km (2)

Hint: Take the distance which is approximately next to your result. Maybe it can deviate because of a rounding error. The numbers are theoretical and don't have to be conform with the real ones.

Task 3: The Pythagoraian Cup

On Samos you can buy everywhere the justice cup of Pythagoras. Probably it's just a legend that it is an invention by Pythagoras, but it doesn't matter.
The cup wants to show that greed is not good and you should moderate.

What happens when you fill the cup over the measure line?

A3: Nothing. (3)
B3: The fluid above the measure line runs out. (5)
C3: The wohle cup becomes empty. (2)

Solution:

To get the coordinates of the cache you have to put in the number which are behind the right answer in brackets.

The Travelbug Hotel provides enaugh beds and comfort for travelbugs and geocoins of all kind. From the hotel room you have a beautiful view on the Agaen Sea and Kokkari. The Aegean sea is only some hundret meters from the hotel located so enjoy the Tsamadu beach or go windsurfing nearby.
